Skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing demand full range of motion and balanced muscle strength. If you're sitting 50 hours a week and then asking your body for eight hours a day on the mountain, your hips are locked, your glutes aren't firing, and your core is asleep. This post walks through how chiropractic care prepares your joints and muscles for intense winter sports — and how we assess and correct the imbalances before they turn into injury.
Why range of motion matters before you hit the slopes
A healthy joint needs two things: full range of motion, and balanced muscle strength to move that joint with freedom and stability.
When you sit all week and then ski hard for four days straight, joints that don't move well and muscles that don't engage well create extra stress and tension on the tissue. That's where injury, pain, and dysfunction come from — not the sport itself, but an unprepared body doing the sport.
How we evaluate joint mobility
At Advanced Health, we measure range of motion objectively. That can be a JTAC computerized analysis or a hands-on visual and orthopedic exam — either way, we want to know exactly where you're restricted before we design a plan.
From there, the plan usually combines a few things:
- Spinal adjustments to restore joint motion
- Soft tissue therapy to break down adhesion in the surrounding muscles
- Traction to the affected joint or spinal segment
- Mobility work you can keep doing on your own
Go through that regimen and the joint moves better, with more freedom and more stability. Full range of motion plus balanced muscle strength dramatically lowers your risk of pain and dysfunction compared to skiing on stiff joints and poor biomechanics.
Adjustments before a big trip
If you've got a ski trip coming up and you're worried about your alignment, a stuck joint, or a compensation pattern you can feel, get adjusted before you go. A joint that's fixed and not moving well increases stress and tension on the tissue and the nerve, which sets you up to compensate — and the more you compensate, the higher your chance of injury.
Chiropractic adjustments remove those restrictions (what we call subluxations) and restore motion. Pair that with soft tissue work and the joint moves the way it's supposed to.

Checking the muscles you're actually going to use
A good pre-season exam doesn't stop at the spine. We look at the specific muscles winter sports demand:
- Deep neck flexors
- The muscles between your shoulder blades
- Pelvic floor
- Glutes and hamstrings
- The full posterior chain that keeps you upright and stable through movement
If there's weakness or imbalance in any of those, we address it with adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and targeted physical therapy — not generic stretches, but exercises matched to what we found on the exam.
The bottom line
Even if you feel fine, a pre-trip visit is validation: Are you in alignment? Are your joints moving well? Is the tissue healthy enough to let those joints move with stability? Are the muscles you're about to rely on actually engaging, or are you compensating?
If any of those answers is no, you're more likely to get hurt. Sort it out first, then enjoy the mountain. To get started, visit our new patients page or contact us.
