June is National Men's Health Month — a good time to look at what actually keeps men moving, lifting, and feeling sharp as the decades stack up. Below, Dr. Luke Stringer breaks down how chiropractic care supports joint health, injury prevention, and stress resilience for men at every age, plus the daily habits that compound over time.
The foundation: move well, eat well, think well
We call it the 360 degrees of wellness in our practice. Three buckets: eat well, think well, move well. Follow through on those and you're already ahead of most people.
Move well. Motion is lotion. Movement releases endorphins, keeps joints lubricated, and supports the spine. Aim for at least 20 minutes a day, ideally 40.
Eat well. Limit processed and inflammatory foods. Load up on dark leafy greens to handle free radicals. Balance your macros — carbs, protein, fat — and get your micronutrients in. Cut back on alcohol and other things that tax the body.
Think well. Corporate and family stress is real. Find a way to decompress. I like a 20-minute barefoot walk on the beach — grounding works for me. Find what works for you and protect that time.
Why flexibility and joint health matter more as you age
A healthy joint moves through its full range with freedom and stability. Lose range of motion and the load inside that joint goes up.
More load means more stress on bone, muscle, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. That stress drives the body to lay down adhesion — fibrous, collagenous scar tissue inside the joint. Adhesion sticks to things. Movement gets viscous. You lose more range of motion. Load goes up again. More adhesion forms.
That's the compound effect: once you start losing mobility, the breakdown accelerates. Whether it's a knee, shoulder, or spinal segment, the joint that stops moving is the joint that degenerates.
How chiropractic care helps active men prevent injuries
Same load-and-compensation principle applies to athletes — including weekend warriors and intramural league guys.
If a joint doesn't move well, stress shifts to the surrounding bone, soft tissue, and nerves. Run a 5K or play a pickup game on top of that and you've stacked the deck against yourself. Restricted joints, poor movement patterns, and weak muscle balance dramatically raise injury risk compared to someone whose joints move freely and whose stabilizers are firing properly.
Chiropractic adjustments restore motion to restricted segments, which lets the rest of the kinetic chain do its job. Pair that with smart strength work and you're protecting yourself before the injury happens.
Spinal issues older men face — and how to head them off
The big one is osteoarthritis (OA) — degeneration inside a joint. In the spine specifically, that often shows up as degenerative disc disease (DDD).
Loss of range of motion and postural change drive that degeneration. So the prevention plan is straightforward:
1. Get adjusted regularly
Adjustments stimulate the joint, help discs imbibe fluid (so they keep acting like shock absorbers), and fire the movement receptors that drive good posture and feed your brain proprioceptive input.
2. Take your spine through its full range of motion
Your neck flexes, extends, side-bends, and rotates. Train those planes repetitively through the week so the joints stay mobile.
3. Strengthen the muscles that hold good posture
- Neck flexors to keep your head over your shoulders.
- Mid-back muscles between the shoulder blades to pull the shoulders back. This is the antidote to the stooped-forward, head-forward, rounded-shoulder posture we associate with aging.
- Core for hip and lumbar stability.
- Glutes and hamstrings so you're not compensating when you stand and move.
4. Load the joints with resistance training
The old advice — get off your feet, do chair yoga, do water aerobics — misses something important. Joints and bones need stress to stay healthy. Loading the spine and big movable joints (knee, hip) triggers osteoblastic activity, which keeps bone dense and prevents osteopenia. Lift weights. Use the leg press. Keep your bones working.

Why men should make chiropractic care part of their lifestyle now
Stress is the silent killer. Our practice in downtown Chicago treats what I call the corporate athlete — guys dealing with poor sleep, low energy, fatigue, irritability, low libido, and trouble managing weight.
Here's the chain: chronic stress raises cortisol. Cortisol blunts insulin sensitivity, which spikes blood sugar, which feeds into type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic issues.
Getting adjusted takes stress off the nervous system. If you came in with neck pain, you'll have less neck pain — but you also let your body function the way it's designed to. Your spine and nervous system are built to run you optimally, without pain or dysfunction. Take the stress off — from posture, work, lifestyle — and you feel better, sleep better, and function better in every way.
That's the case for ongoing care: not just fixing symptoms, but staying ahead of the breakdown.
