If your child struggles with ADHD, sensory overload, or trouble focusing, the source of the problem may be higher up the chain than you think — specifically, the top of the neck. ADHD is a nervous system condition, not just a behavior problem

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in kids. It's usually diagnosed in childhood and can carry into adulthood. Children with ADHD have a hard time paying attention, controlling impulses, and regulating activity level.

Common signs we see in the clinic:

  • Difficulty concentrating in the classroom; frequent daydreaming
  • Forgetfulness and losing things
  • Fidgeting, squirming, constant talking
  • Careless mistakes and impulsive risk-taking
  • Trouble staying on task

ADHD severity ranges from mild to severe, but the underlying theme is the same: the nervous system isn't regulating the way it should.

Why the upper neck matters

Chiropractors are doctors of the nervous system. Our training is focused on the spine — the body's suit of armor that protects the nerves controlling how you feel and function.

Your nervous system has two main modes:

  • Sympathetic — fight or flight
  • Parasympathetic — rest and digest

Kids with sensory disorders are typically stuck in sympathetic mode. They never fully drop into rest-and-digest, which is why sleep, digestion, and focus all suffer at the same time.

When we evaluate these kids, we almost always look at the upper cervical spine first. The C1-C2 area sits right next to the brainstem and contains more nervous system activity than anywhere else in the spine. If that area is compressed, the whole system gets noisy.

What we see on X-ray

In most of these kids, the neck curve has flattened or even reversed, and the head has shifted forward — often from years of looking down at phones, tablets, and homework. To keep the eyes level, the head tips back into extension at the very top, closing the space between the occiput (base of the skull) and C1 (the top vertebra).

That compression creates what we call a subluxation — a misalignment in the joint that irritates the nerves at C1-C2. The result: elevated cortisol, a body locked into sympathetic tone, and a child who can't downshift.

What chiropractic care actually does

The goal is to take stress off the upper cervical spine so the nervous system can settle. A typical plan for a child with ADHD or a sensory condition includes:

  • Specific spinal adjustments to clear the subluxation patterns
  • Spinal traction to address structural shifts — the forward head, the lost neck curve — using Chiropractic BioPhysics methods
  • Soft tissue therapy to break down adhesion (scar tissue) in the muscles

A real-world example: Claire

One case that stands out is a little girl named Claire. By the time her mom brought her in, Claire had been through the medical workup — evaluations, brain scans, medications — without meaningful improvement.

Claire couldn't process sensory input. She couldn't sit in the lunchroom because the noise gave her migraines. She couldn't make it through a class. Eventually her family pulled her out and homeschooled her — not by choice, but because she physically couldn't get through a school day.

On exam and X-ray, we found significant forward head posture, a reversed neck curve, and her atlas (C1) jammed right up against the base of her skull. She was heavily subluxated in exactly the area we'd expect.

1. Detailed consultation

We sit down with you and your child to understand why you're coming in, how long it's been going on, any prior traumas (including birth trauma and falls), what a typical day looks like, and what symptoms show up — pain, dysfunction, behavior, or all three. We also talk about your family's goals.

2. Orthopedic and neurological exam

We check joint function and look for the specific subluxations that are creating nerve stress. For any child with ADHD or a sensory condition, we pay particular attention to the upper cervical spine.

3. X-rays

We need to see the alignment — has the head shifted forward? Is the curve flat or reversed? What does the angle between the skull and the top two vertebrae look like? You can't fix what you can't measure.

4. Report and recommendations

A note on patience

Chiropractic care isn't one-and-done, and there's no silver bullet. Cleaning out long-standing subluxation patterns takes time and repetition. Your child didn't wake up one morning with a reversed neck curve — it built up from trauma (a fall, a car accident) or from years of repetitive stress: tablets, phones, homework, poor ergonomics.

Give the body time. When the nervous system isn't under constant stress, kids tend to settle, focus, and function the way they're built to.
