Understanding neck pain

Neck pain affects up to 70% of working adults. Learn the causes, when to act, and how chiropractic care in Chicago's South Loop can help…

Up to 70% of working Americans deal with neck pain at some point in their careers, and it quietly shapes what you can and can't do each day. This post breaks down the two types of neck pain, why ignoring it makes things worse, a quick self-check you can do at home, and what real recovery looks like.

Ask yourself: what has neck pain stopped you from doing that your family and friends do without thinking? And what would you do tomorrow if you woke up without it? Life is too short to spend it stiff and sore.

The real cost of neck pain

Treating low back and neck pain in the U.S. costs more than $86 billion a year, and the average person loses around $1,800 annually to lost productivity at work. The question isn't whether you can afford to treat your neck pain — it's whether you can afford not to.

Acute vs. chronic neck pain

There are two kinds of neck pain, and they need to be understood differently.

Acute neck pain

Acute pain lasts three months or less. It's usually triggered by trauma — a car accident, a workplace injury, or a sudden strain. Caught early, it tends to resolve well.

Chronic neck pain

Chronic pain has been around for six months or longer. It's often the result of an old injury that was never properly corrected, or a repetitive-use pattern like sitting at a desk 50+ hours a week. The mechanism matters when we plan your care, but most paths to recovery share the same core principles.

Pain is information — listen to it early

Pain is your body telling you something is wrong. The sooner you address it, the shorter your course of care and the better your outcome. Procrastination is the thief of health: the longer you wait, the more compensations build up, and the more time, energy, and money it takes to undo them.

A quick at-home neck check

A healthy neck has three things going for it: good alignment, full pain-free range of motion, and stability through that motion.

  • Alignment. Take a side-profile photo of yourself standing naturally. Your ear should sit directly above your AC joint (the bony point on top of your shoulder). If your ear is forward of your shoulder, you have forward head posture.
  • Range of motion. You should be able to look up, down, side to side, and rotate fully — without pain or sharp restriction.
  • Stability and strength. Your neck should feel steady, not wobbly or fatigued, through those same motions.

This last piece is hard to assess on your own. A chiropractor can measure it objectively.

Why ignoring it gets expensive

If any part of that check is off, compensations start stacking up. Soft tissue — muscles, ligaments, and tendons — begins to break down, which limits your flexibility, which speeds up the breakdown. Pressure builds on the discs in your neck, and over time those discs degenerate. That can lead to numbness in the hands or even loss of motor function.

Once bone and disc changes set in, you can't reverse them. That's why addressing the issue now beats waiting until the damage is permanent.

How we approach neck pain at Advanced Health

At Advanced Health Chiropractic, we've helped thousands of your Chicagoland neighbors get out of neck pain and back to living without restriction. Every new patient starts with a thorough initial consultation: detailed health history, orthopedic and neurological testing, and in-office digital imaging. That's how we move from "your neck hurts" to a clear diagnosis and a specific plan that addresses the root cause.

For care, we use a blend of chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, spinal decompression, and targeted soft tissue work. The goal isn't just to take the edge off — it's to produce measurable, lasting changes you can see on follow-up imaging.

If you've tried other providers and you're frustrated that nothing has stuck, we'd like to be the resource you've been looking for.
