
Tech neck is the loss of the natural curve in your neck from spending hours looking down at phones, tablets, and laptops. What tech neck actually is
Tech neck is a relatively new clinical pattern, and it shows up clearly on an X-ray. A healthy neck has roughly a 42-degree curve, and the top vertebra should sit directly over the one below it. With tech neck, that top bone shifts forward, the curve flattens out, and the neck starts to look unnaturally straight.
Here’s the quick self-check: sit in front of a mirror and turn to look at your profile. Your ear should stack on top of your shoulder. If your ear sits in front of your shoulder or your chest, your head has shifted forward — and an X-ray is the only way to confirm exactly how much.
We see this most often in younger corporate professionals — the people spending eight to ten hours a day at a keyboard and then more hours on a phone.
What causes it
The cause is simple: too much time in flexion. Phones, tablets, and laptops pull your head down and forward, and we’re not built for that. Humans are bipedal — we’re designed to be upright and moving, not folded over a screen.
The biomechanics make it worse. As your head drifts forward of your chest, its effective weight on your spine increases dramatically. Add downward flexion on top of that, and you’re loading the cervical spine in a way it wasn’t designed to handle. Over months and years of repetitive stress, the curve flattens.
How fast can it develop?
It depends on your age, your symptoms, and how many hours a day you’re looking down. Someone on their phone an hour a day will progress slowly. Someone looking down six or more hours a day can change quickly.
We had a dentist as a patient whose neck looked pretty good on his initial exam. Three months later — three months of leaning over patients all day — he came back with a two-inch forward shift of the top vertebra and a completely flattened curve. He’d progressed from first-phase to second-phase degeneration in 12 weeks. That’s an extreme example, but it shows what sustained flexion can do.
Can tech neck be corrected?
Yes — in most cases, if there isn’t advanced degeneration or other contraindications, the curve and alignment can be restored. How much correction is possible depends on your individual spine, which is why imaging matters.
What the correction process looks like

How to prevent tech neck
There’s one rule that does most of the work: keep four fingers between your chin and your chest.
Try it now. Take your hand, separate your thumb from your fingers, place your pinky on your sternum, and bring your chin down to the top of your index finger. That’s the maximum amount of forward flexion you should allow in your neck — period. Whether you’re scrolling Instagram in bed, reading a book, or working at a laptop, the four-finger rule keeps your head out of deep flexion.
Three other habits matter:
- Get a sit-stand desk and actually alternate between the two through the day.
- Sit properly when you are sitting — feet flat, screen at eye level, shoulders relaxed.
- Take postural breaks. Every 30 to 45 minutes, stand up, roll your shoulders back, and reset. This keeps the deep stabilizing muscles of your spine engaged.
Do those things consistently and you’ll keep your head where it belongs — over your shoulders, not out in front of them.
