What is Disc Injuries?
The intervertebral discs are the shock-absorbing pads that sit between the bones of your spine. Each disc has a tough outer ring called the annulus fibrosus and a soft, gel-like center called the nucleus pulposus. They cushion impact, allow your spine to move, and act as spacers that protect the nerves passing through the spinal column. When a disc is injured or degenerates, those functions break down — and the resulting pressure on nearby nerves can cause pain, weakness, and sensory changes that travel far from the spine itself.
A bulging disc occurs when the outer ring weakens and the disc pushes outward beyond its normal boundary, like a tire that's slightly flat on one side. A herniated disc (sometimes called a slipped or ruptured disc) is more severe — the outer ring actually tears and the inner gel material pushes through, potentially pressing directly on a nerve root. Degenerative disc disease is a different process: over time, discs lose hydration and height, becoming thinner and less able to absorb force. All three conditions can be painful, and all three can cause nerve symptoms that radiate into the arms or legs.
Disc injuries are more common than most people realize. They occur from acute trauma — a bad lift, a fall, a car accident — but also from gradual wear, poor posture, and long-term spinal misalignment that puts uneven pressure on the discs over years. You don't have to do something dramatic to injure a disc. Sometimes it's the cumulative effect of how you've been sitting, moving, and loading your spine for years.
Common symptoms
Disc injury symptoms vary depending on which disc is affected and whether a nerve is being compressed, but these are the most common patterns we evaluate:
- Sharp or aching lower back or neck pain
- Pain that radiates down one or both legs (sciatica)
- Arm pain, weakness, or numbness
- Pain that worsens with sitting or forward bending
- Burning or tingling sensations in the extremities
- Muscle weakness in the legs or feet
- Pain that improves with walking but worsens with rest
- Reduced flexibility and difficulty standing upright
Why typical treatment often falls short
Pain medication and muscle relaxants are the most commonly prescribed treatments for disc injuries, and while they can reduce discomfort in the short term, they do nothing to address the disc itself. The disc is still damaged, still pressing on the nerve — the medication simply turns down the alarm signal. When the medication wears off, or when the patient tries to return to normal activity, the pain comes back. Anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce swelling around the affected nerve, which sometimes provides meaningful relief, but again, the underlying structural problem persists.
Surgery is sometimes appropriate for disc injuries, but it is frequently recommended before conservative options have been genuinely exhausted. Discectomy and spinal fusion carry real risks, including failed back surgery syndrome — a condition where pain continues or worsens even after surgery. Many patients who undergo spinal surgery in our community never received an adequate course of spinal decompression therapy first, which is a non-invasive treatment that has strong clinical evidence for disc injuries. What to expect
Your first appointment includes a detailed health history, a focused physical examination, and X-ray imaging of your spine. If you have recent MRI results, bring them — they add valuable information. By the end of your first visit, you'll have a working diagnosis and an understanding of what's causing your symptoms. We'll walk you through the proposed care plan and what each component of treatment is designed to accomplish.
Disc injuries require a sustained treatment course because tissue healing takes time. Most patients in our decompression program begin to notice meaningful improvement within the first six to ten sessions, but a full course — typically 20 to 30 decompression sessions over six to eight weeks — is necessary for lasting structural change. Physical therapy exercises and CBP corrections run alongside decompression to address the spinal alignment issues that were placing abnormal stress on the disc. When you complete the plan, you'll have follow-up imaging to compare against your baseline — objective evidence of what changed.
