Chiropractic care is all about improving range of motion in the joints. At our South Loop office we treat a lot of patients with pain in the hips, knees, feet, ankles, shoulders, elbows, and wrists — not just the spine. Essentially, if a joint moves, a chiropractor can evaluate it and work with it. This post walks through why range of motion matters so much, how a stuck joint can create pain in places you wouldn't expect, and what our approach to alleviating joint pain looks like.
Why range of motion is the foundation of a healthy joint
A prerequisite of a healthy joint is full range of motion. When a joint loses that motion — it's stuck, out of alignment, not gliding the way it should — stress and tension build inside the joint and the soft tissue around it. The muscles, ligaments, and tendons that cross the joint have to work harder to move it.
Muscles that work harder break down faster. As they break down, they accumulate adhesion — essentially scar tissue in the muscle. And adhesion feeds the cycle: more adhesion, less range of motion, more stress and tension, more breakdown. That's the hamster wheel a lot of our patients are stuck on when they first walk in.
How one stuck joint can create pain somewhere else
Joint pain rarely stays put. If your left hip is really jammed up and not moving well, your knee may have to compensate — shifting inward, shifting forward, or moving too much. That compensation can create knee pain. Poor knee mechanics can then drive foot and ankle pain, or the chain can run in the other direction.
That's the kinetic chain at work. The lumbopelvic spine, hips, knees, and feet operate as one unit. The same goes for the cervical and thoracic spine, shoulders, neck, and head. Any thorough chiropractor evaluating joint pain has to look above and below the painful joint to find what's actually driving the problem — the spot that hurts isn't always the spot that's dysfunctional.
What sitting all day does to your joints and discs
Here in downtown Chicago, most of the patients we see are corporate athletes — people who sit in flexion, leaning forward at a desk, for hours at a time. That posture raises the pressure inside your spinal discs, and the joints around them lock up from all that sedentary time.
Discs that sit under constant pressure without motion start to dehydrate and degenerate. The collagen tissue that holds fluid in the center of the disc gets brittle and begins to break down. And healthy, hydrated discs matter — they're the shock absorbers of your spine, built to handle gravity every single day.
How chiropractic adjustments may help
Getting your spine adjusted is designed to get stuck joints moving again. That motion stimulates the joint and encourages osmosis, which helps draw fluid back into the discs — supporting disc health rather than letting the degeneration cycle run unchecked.
One adjustment isn't the whole story. Repeated adjustments over a course of care may help improve joint mechanics, support disc health, and re-engage the postural muscles that hold your spine up. In our office we say motion is lotion. We're built to move — so move your body physically, and get the joints that are stuck moving again with chiropractic care.
And this isn't limited to the spine. Chiropractors are trained to assess and adjust joint mobility head to toe: foot, ankle, knee, hip, wrist, elbow, shoulder. If it moves, we can work with it.

Our roadmap from pain to function
Once we know what's driving your pain, we build a plan around four key pieces:
- Good joint function through chiropractic adjustments
- Good spinal alignment through spinal traction
- Healthy muscle tissue through soft tissue therapy
- Balanced muscle strength through physical therapy
Blending those four addresses the joint, the alignment, the soft tissue, and the strength deficit at the same time — which is how many patients get durable, objective improvement rather than short-term symptom relief.
For extremity joints, we also offer dedicated programs — our Knee Restoration Program and Shoulder Strong Program — for knees and shoulders that need more than adjustments alone.
