
Spinal decompression therapy can pull bulging disc fluid off an irritated nerve and quiet back pain fast. What spinal decompression actually does
Discs are the cushions between the bones of your spine. Trauma like a car accident, or years of poor posture at a desk, wears those discs down. When a disc is damaged, its fluid can shift outward and press into a nerve root. Once disc fluid contacts a nerve, you feel pain — often pain that radiates down a leg or arm.
Traditional spinal decompression machines lay you flat on your back and gently pull along the length of your spine. For the low back, the pelvis is pinned and a harness wraps your torso. The machine slowly opens the joint, closes it, opens it again. That opening creates a vacuum inside the disc, and the vacuum pulls the disc fluid back toward the center — away from the nerve. Pain drops.
It works. The catch is what happens when you stand up.
Why decompression alone isn't enough
The moment you're upright and gravity is loading your spine again, your spinal alignment determines where pressure goes. If your alignment is off, disc fluid tends to shift right back toward the same nerve canal it was pulled away from.
Here's a common example. Your lower back should have about a 40-degree curve. If your curve is flat, you're loading the front of the disc every time you stand, walk, or sit. A traditional decompression session will open the disc, create the vacuum, and you'll feel better walking out. But the curve is still flat, so the same pressure pattern resumes immediately.

How we combine decompression with alignment
Before we put anyone on a decompression table, we run a detailed exam and take X-rays. The X-rays tell us exactly how your spine is loading: how much curve you have (or don't), and whether any vertebrae have shifted out of position.
Looking at your body from the side, your shoulder, hip, and knee should stack on top of each other. The top bone of your lumbar spine should sit directly over the bottom bone, with a 40-degree curve through the low back. When trauma — say, being rear-ended at 60 mph — shifts the top lumbar vertebra an inch forward and flattens the curve to 20 degrees, every step you take afterward drives more pressure into the disc.
Our traction setup is built around correcting that. We position you in the posture your spine should be in, then add gentle tension through the spine for six to twelve minutes. Held that long, the ligaments warm up — a phenomenon called the creep effect — and become pliable enough to let the spine settle into a better position.
Repeated over a course of care, this does two things at once:
- Decompresses the disc the same way a traditional machine would, pulling fluid off the nerve.
- Reshapes the spine so the corrected position actually holds when you're upright.

What this looks like for a real case
Let's go back to that rear-end collision. You come in, we image the spine, and the X-ray confirms the top lumbar bone is an inch forward of where it should be, with the curve cut roughly in half. We know that alignment is feeding pressure straight into the front of the disc and engaging the nerve.
From there we can map out where the spine needs to go, set up the traction to load it in that direction, and run sessions long enough for the ligaments to respond. Patients get out of pain in the short term, and the alignment change protects them in the long term.
Why alignment is the long game
Most of the new research on neuromusculoskeletal pain keeps circling back to the same point: spinal alignment matters. Quick fixes that ignore alignment tend to come back. Approaches that objectively change the shape of the spine tend to hold.
