TMJ treatment plan at Advanced Health Chiropractic

How we evaluate and treat TMJ pain at our South Loop clinic: joint function, spinal alignment, soft tissue therapy, and postural rehab.

If you're dealing with jaw pain, clicking, or headaches tied to your TMJ, you want to know what an actual treatment plan looks like — not just a list of symptoms. Here's exactly how we evaluate and treat TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain at our South Loop clinic, from your first visit through a corrective care plan.

Our approach is a three- to four-pronged attack: restore joint motion, correct structural shifts in the spine, address soft tissue adhesions, and rebalance the postural muscles pulling your head forward.

Visit one: history, exam, and X-rays — no guessing

We don't treat on the first visit. We evaluate first, then build a plan around what we actually find. Here's what visit one looks like:

Detailed consultation

You'll fill out an intake form and health history, then sit down with one of our doctors for a focused conversation: when the pain started, how often it shows up, and how it's affecting your eating, sleeping, and daily life.

Orthopedic and joint evaluation

Next, we take your spine through its full range of motion and look for joints that aren't moving the way they should. When a joint is shifted or stuck — what we call a subluxation — it creates stress and tension on the surrounding tissue and nerves. Most of our TMJ patients are subluxated in the upper cervical spine.

That matters because your skull sits on top of C1 and C2, the top two bones in your neck. The nerves that exit at that level go on to innervate your eyes, ears, nose, throat, and jaw. When those joints aren't aligned and moving freely, your jaw feels it.

Neurologic exam

We run a series of neurologic tests to see how your nervous system is functioning and where it's being irritated.

X-rays for an objective diagnosis

We want our diagnosis to be objective, not a guess. Chiropractors read X-rays a little differently than medical doctors. Yes, we screen for pathology — fractures, infections, anything unusual — but we also evaluate alignment from a biomechanical standpoint.

From the front, your spine should stack straight. Lateral or rotational shifts create tension that can pull on the jaw and refer pain into the TMJ. From the side, your neck should have roughly a 42-degree curve. As that curve flattens, your head shifts forward, muscles overwork, and joints fall out of alignment.

Visit two: the report and your treatment plan

On your second visit we walk you through everything — exam findings, X-ray findings, and what's actually driving your jaw pain. Then we lay out the best treatment plan for your case and get started.

The four pillars of TMJ care at AHC

1. Chiropractic adjustments to restore joint function

We adjust the upper cervical spine (and anywhere else we found restriction) to get those joints moving freely and stably again. This takes pressure off the nerves feeding the jaw.

2. Spinal traction to correct structural shifts

We use Chiropractic BioPhysics methods — a structural, data-driven approach to chiropractic. Adjustments restore motion, but if your head is shifted forward or your spine has lost its proper curves, you need spinal traction to objectively reshape those structural patterns. Current research backs this up: long-term correction requires addressing the structure, not just the symptom.

3. Soft tissue therapy

When muscles are under constant tension, they break down and form adhesions — think of glue stuck inside the muscle fibers. The masseter and especially the pterygoid muscles are big culprits in TMJ pain. We use targeted soft tissue protocols to break up those adhesions and restore healthy, flexible tissue.

4. Postural rehab and physical therapy

A functional exam tells us which muscles are doing too much work and which ones aren't pulling their weight. With TMJ patients, upper-cross syndrome is common — the big muscles in the chest and front of the neck pull your head forward while the deep neck flexors and mid-back muscles go to sleep. We rebuild that balance through targeted physical therapy.

Why this approach works

When you address joint function, structural alignment, soft tissue, and muscular imbalance together — instead of chasing the jaw in isolation — TMJ patients get real, lasting results. It's a big part of why we have over 200 five-star Google reviews and are one of the highest-reviewed clinics in Chicago.
